Kinda Tropical

Housed in a former filling station at the far end of E 7th St is Kinda Tropical. Its an all day cafe and bar that has one of my favorite patios in Austin. The menu has some classic central Texas favorites like chips and queso and a really enjoyable burger but it also has as its name suggests, some more “tropical” items like Cuban yucca fries and a fried shrimp bowl served with jasmine rice and a coconut tom kha. The drinks here also have a laid back Texas ice house meets pan-caribbean vibe with frozen drinks like a tumeric piña colada or a michelada spiced with black vinegar, crystal hot sauce and lime. The patio is spacious, breezy and provides plenty of places to sit so its a great place to bring a group, or if you are going solo and maybe need to get some work done the inside is typically quiet and less crowded. Its the kind of place that checks a lot of boxes for situations I often find myself in, a laid back atmosphere with solid cocktails and food decent enough to come for a stand alone meal, or to act as a vehicle to soak up said drinks.
