Little Deli

After spending the better part of a decade in New York City I became somewhat of a self proclaimed pizza connoisseur, so when I moved to Austin I just assumed that part of my culinary journey was over but boy, was I wrong. Austin has plenty of legitimate pizzerias that dish out excellent pies but my favorite is Little Deli. Its kind of a “if you know, you know” spot located in an old school shopping center in the quiet Crestview neighborhood (they also have a newer location in the Windsor Park neighborhood, but go to the original, its a vibe thing).

Little Deli originally opened up in 1992 as a small sandwich shop, and it still is very much a sandwich shop with a majority of its menu taken up with hot and cold sandwiches as well as Italian subs. In 2009 they added a pizza kitchen offering what they call New Jersey style (thin crust) pizza by the slice or whole pie. If you are ordering pizza by the slice they offer cheese, pepperoni, or a rotating daily special pie. I love to go on a weekday afternoon, see what pie looks good, order a slice and sit inside no matter what the weather is because theres just something about the retro wood panelling, buzz of the customers that you can tell have been going there forever putting in their very specific orders, and watching the workers stretch the pizza dough by hand that just feels good. Pro Tip: Before you leave make sure to order one of their homemade black and white or chewy chocolate cookies to go. I guarantee it won’t last the ride home.
